Is Tony Chachere's / Slap Ya Mama Cajun Seasoning (Original Blend) low FODMAP?

FODMAP score

40

Moderate

Cajun seasoning is a moderate FODMAP load: both leading brands contain garlic, but it sits at or near the end of the label, so a light shake delivers only a small dose. Tony Chachere's current Original Creole label reads salt, red pepper, black pepper, chili powder (chili pepper, spices, salt, garlic powder), dehydrated garlic, and silicon dioxide — salt is far and away the main ingredient, and the peppers themselves carry no meaningful FODMAP load. Slap Ya Mama's Original Blend is even shorter: salt, red pepper, black pepper, garlic. The math works in your favor at shaker doses — a quarter-teaspoon sprinkle over a chicken breast contains only a fraction of a gram of the blend's garlic. Where it changes is Cajun cooking by the spoonful: a tablespoon-plus stirred into a pot of gumbo or jambalaya, or packed onto fish as a blackening crust, concentrates that garlic considerably. Note that Tony's picks up garlic twice — once as dehydrated garlic and again inside its chili powder sub-blend. If you are in a strict elimination phase or know garlic fructans are a personal trigger, dust lightly, or build the same heat-and-herb profile from cayenne, paprika, black pepper, oregano, and thyme with zero garlic or onion.

What's inside

SaltThe dominant ingredient in both brands; sodium is not a FODMAP concern.
Red pepper (cayenne)Pure ground chile brings heat, not fermentable carbohydrates.
Black pepperA true spice with no meaningful FODMAP load at any shake-size serving.
Dehydrated garlicConcentrated fructans, though its late position on the label keeps shaker doses small.
Chili powder sub-blend (Tony Chachere's)Contains its own garlic powder, quietly adding a second garlic source to the total.

📏 A light shake (about 1/4 tsp) per portion keeps the garlic dose minimal; measuring it by the tablespoon into gumbo, jambalaya, or a blackening crust multiplies it — go easy at pot scale.
