Is McCormick Chili Powder (American Blend) low FODMAP?

FODMAP score

45

Moderate

American-style chili powder is a moderate pick: the blend is mostly FODMAP-quiet chiles, cumin, and oregano, but nearly every mainstream brand adds garlic, and this is a spice used by the tablespoon. McCormick's current label lists chili pepper, spices (including cumin and oregano), salt, garlic, and silicon dioxide. Ground chile itself is not a FODMAP concern, and neither are cumin or oregano, so the whole question comes down to that garlic and your serving size. A pinch dusted over roasted corn is a non-event; two heaping tablespoons in a pot of chili is a different story, because the garlic accumulates alongside whatever fresh onion and beans the recipe already carries. Know the distinction on US shelves, too: 'chili powder' means this seasoned blend, while jars labeled ground ancho, chipotle, or New Mexico chile are usually 100% chile — pure ground chile is the effectively FODMAP-free option and often what a recipe actually needs. If chili night is the goal, build the blend yourself from pure ground chile, cumin, oregano, and smoked paprika: you keep all of the flavor, control the salt, and drop the garlic entirely.

What's inside

Chili pepperThe bulk of the jar; pure ground chile is FODMAP-free for practical purposes.
CuminA true spice carrying no meaningful FODMAP load, even at recipe quantities.
OreganoDried herb with no fermentable-carb concern at any culinary dose.
GarlicA small fraction of the blend, but tablespoon-scale use in chili lets the fructans add up.
SaltFlavor and sodium only — not a FODMAP.

📏 A pinch as garnish barely registers; the standard 2 tablespoons in a family-size pot is where the garlic becomes relevant — count it alongside the recipe's onion and beans, not in isolation.

Gentler alternatives

Pure ground ancho or New Mexico chile + cumin + oreganoThe classic chili flavor built entirely from garlic-free single spices, safe by the tablespoon.

Fody Taco SeasoningA certified low-FODMAP blend that covers taco and chili night without garlic or onion.

Smoked paprika (added to the DIY blend)Restores the smoky depth the garlic would otherwise provide, with no FODMAP cost.
