Is Swanson Chicken Broth low FODMAP?
FODMAP score
58
Moderate
A splash to deglaze a pan, probably fine — a cup as a soup base, no — because Swanson's classic broth simmers real onion into the stock. The label is short: chicken stock, salt, natural flavoring, a mirepoix of carrots, celery and onions, chicken fat and yeast extract. The trouble is that onion fructans are highly water-soluble — the very property that makes broth flavorful means the fructans leave the vegetable and ride along in the liquid, so there is no picking around them. The celery contributes a little mannitol, and the unspecified natural flavoring is a modest question mark. On the safe side of the ledger, chicken stock, chicken fat and yeast extract carry no fermentable load, and no garlic is declared anywhere. Because the mirepoix sits low on the ingredient list, the concentration per cup is real but not extreme — this is a dose problem more than a deal-breaker in trace amounts. A quarter-cup used in cooking is a fraction of the exposure of drinking broth by the mug or building a four-cup pot of soup on it. When broth is the backbone of a recipe, an onion-free chicken broth swaps in one-for-one with no technique change.
What's inside
📏 Dose scales directly with volume: a quarter-cup to deglaze a pan is a fraction of the onion exposure of a 1-cup mug, and a 4-cup pot of soup multiplies it again.
