Low FODMAP at Costa Coffee

Costa is the UK's biggest coffee chain, and the drinks side is genuinely workable on a low-FODMAP day: everything from the machine is customisable, so the lactose load is entirely in your control. The food cabinet is a different story — it is almost wall-to-wall wheat (toasties, paninis, baps, wraps, croissants) with onion and garlic threaded through most savoury fillings. Treat Costa as a drinks stop with a couple of packaged snacks rather than a lunch venue, and it works well.

✅ Safest picks

5

Americano or espresso (black)

Just coffee and water — no FODMAP ingredients at all. A small splash of dairy milk adds only a trivial amount of lactose if you want to soften it.

💬 Order it: Size down: caffeine is a gut stimulant for some people independent of FODMAPs, and Costa's Massimo is enormous. A Primo americano with a dash of milk is the lowest-risk order on the whole board.

20

Primo cappuccino or flat white with coconut or almond milk

A cappuccino or flat white carries far less milk than a latte, and coconut and almond are the lowest-FODMAP plant drinks Costa stocks. Costa does not offer lactose-free cow's milk, so plant swaps are the route to a milky drink.

💬 Order it: Ask for coconut or almond specifically — UK soya drinks are made from whole soya beans (a GOS source) and the oat drink adds up in bigger sizes. Standard syrups are sucrose-based, so one pump of caramel or vanilla is fine; skip honey.

5

English breakfast or peppermint tea

Plain black tea or peppermint tea brewed in water contains nothing of FODMAP concern. Peppermint is a pleasant option if coffee itself sits badly with you.

💬 Order it: Take it black or with a small splash of milk. Avoid the fruit teas built on apple pieces if excess fructose is a trigger for you — check the tag.

25

Porridge

Oats are low-FODMAP at a standard serve, making this the most realistic hot food order. The catches are the milk it's prepared with and sweet toppings.

💬 Order it: Ask whether it can be made with water or a plant milk, and skip honey or dried-fruit toppings — plain with a little sugar is the cleanest version.

30

Gluten-free brownie or free-from bake

Costa usually carries one or two wrapped gluten-free bakes, which removes the wheat-fructan load that rules out the rest of the cake stand. Butter and chocolate in a single portion are low-lactose.

💬 Order it: Read the wrapper: UK free-from bakes sometimes bulk up with chicory root fibre (inulin), apple or honey, which puts them straight back on the risky list.

10

Ready salted crisps or plain popcorn

The till-side snack baskets are quietly the best food in the shop: plain potato or corn with salt and oil has no FODMAP ingredients.

💬 Order it: Stick to ready salted or sweet-and-salty popcorn — flavoured crisps almost always carry onion and garlic powder. A banana from the fruit basket (where stocked) is another easy add.

75

Medio or Massimo dairy latte / hot chocolate

UK Costa sizes are huge — a Medio latte holds roughly a mug and a half of milk, and hot chocolate stacks milk on milk-chocolate powder. That's a substantial lactose dose in one sitting.

80

Toasties and paninis (ham & cheese, chicken & bacon, mozzarella & tomato)

Two thick slices of wheat bread is a big fructan serve before you get to the fillings, and the sauces, chutneys and marinades in most savoury lines lean on onion and garlic.

75

Breakfast baps and wraps

Wheat bap or tortilla plus sausages (typically made with onion) plus ketchup or spiced sauces — three FODMAP layers in one handheld item.

70

Frappés and iced blended drinks

Blended over milk with sauces and cream toppings, these are the biggest lactose delivery vehicles on the menu, and the flavour sauces are harder to swap than syrup pumps.

65

Croissants, pains au chocolat and muffins

Butter-laminated wheat pastry is dense in fructans, and fruit muffins can add excess fructose on top. There is no low-FODMAP portion of a croissant worth having.

60

Chai latte

The chai is a milk-based drink built on a sweetened spice powder, so you get a full latte's worth of lactose plus a blend you can't inspect at the counter.

Good to know

  • The machine is your friend, the cabinet is the trap: every drink is customisable at Costa, almost no food item is.
  • Size down. Primo–Medio–Massimo is a lactose escalator — the same latte can double its milk between sizes.
  • There's no lactose-free cow's milk at Costa. Coconut or almond are the lowest-FODMAP swaps; UK soya is whole-bean (GOS) and oat adds up in large sizes.
  • Free-from is not FODMAP-free: check gluten-free bakes for chicory fibre (inulin), apple and honey before assuming they're fine.
  • Standard syrups are sugar-based and fine in a pump or two — it's honey, fruit purées and flavour sauces that need the side-eye.
  • Costa publishes full allergen and nutrition information online — use it to scan savoury items for onion and garlic before you queue.
