Low FODMAP at Sonic Drive-In

Sonic is friendlier than most drive-ins if you strip orders down: the standard burger patties are seasoned with just salt, pepper and yeast extract — no onion or garlic — and the in-store tots are plain potato, oil and salt. The traps are the sauces (even the ketchup carries onion powder plus HFCS), the chicken line (every piece is breaded, with garlic and onion powder in the brine, pre-dust and breading), and the HFCS syrup running through nearly every slush, limeade and soda.

✅ Safest picks

22

Tots

Sonic's posted ingredient statement lists just potatoes, vegetable oil, salt and dextrose — no onion or garlic powder, unlike many chains' seasoned potatoes.

💬 Order it: Order them plain — skip the chili or cheese toppers. Dip in mustard or plain mayo instead of ketchup (Sonic's ketchup contains onion powder). Note they share a fryer with breaded items.

40

Jr. Burger

The beef patty is seasoned with only salt, black pepper and yeast extract — no onion or garlic — so the small wheat bun is the main FODMAP load left.

💬 Order it: Order it plain with lettuce, tomato and pickle, add mustard or mayo, and say no ketchup and no onions. Ask for no bun or a lettuce wrap in a tray to drop the wheat almost entirely.

48

SONIC Cheeseburger

Same clean salt-and-pepper patty, but the full-size bun adds a bigger wheat serving and the American cheese slice a little lactose.

💬 Order it: Ask for it plain with mustard or mayo only — no ketchup (onion powder + HFCS), no diced onion, no signature sauces. Skip the cheese slice or the bun if you're extra sensitive.

55

All-American Dog

The all-beef frank lists no onion or garlic, though it carries a trace of sorbitol and unspecified flavorings, and the bun is wheat with HFCS.

💬 Order it: Order it plain with mustard only — the standard build comes with ketchup, relish and chopped onions, so say all three off. Eat half the bun or skip it to lighten the wheat.

18

Diet Limeade

The limeade base is real lime juice with sucralose over Sprite Zero, so it dodges the HFCS that sweetens the regular slushes and limeades.

💬 Order it: Stick to a small or medium — carbonation alone can bloat a sensitive gut — and skip added fruit or regular flavor syrup shots, which are HFCS-based.

5

Unsweet Iced Tea

Plain brewed tea contains none of the common fermentable triggers and none of the HFCS in Sonic's other fountain drinks.

💬 Order it: Order it unsweet with no flavor add-ins — every regular flavor syrup (peach, raspberry, cherry) is HFCS or corn-syrup based. Fresh lime or lemon wedges are fine.

⚠️ Skip these

92

Chili Cheese Coney

The chili seasoning stacks onion powder, garlic powder and wheat flour, poured over an HFCS wheat bun and finished with dairy cheese.

82

Crispy Tenders

Plain-looking chicken that isn't plain: the marinade, pre-dust and breading each list garlic powder and onion powder, all wrapped in wheat flour.

88

OREO Sonic Blast

Lactose-heavy soft serve blended with wheat-based cookie pieces and corn-syrup sweetened mix — three trigger groups in one cup.

78

Corn Dog

The wheat-and-corn batter is sweetened with sugar, honey and dextrose plus whey, wrapped around a corn-syrup frank.

75

Route 44 Cherry Limeade

The cherry syrup and the Sprite base are both HFCS-sweetened, and the 44 oz size turns that into a large excess-fructose dose in one sitting.

Good to know

  • Sonic's ketchup lists onion powder plus HFCS — swap it for mustard or plain mayo, which per the chain's ingredient guide contain no onion, garlic or HFCS.
  • Nearly every signature sauce — Ranch, Smasher Sauce, Groovy Sauce, BBQ, both cheese sauces, garlic butter, tartar — lists garlic and/or onion. Order sandwiches completely plain and add mustard or mayo yourself.
  • There is no unbreaded chicken here: the fillet, tenders and bites all carry garlic and onion powder in multiple layers. The plain beef patty (salt, pepper, yeast extract only) is the lower-trigger protein.
  • Make tots your default side over onion rings (whole onion in wheat-buttermilk batter) — but know fryers are shared with breaded items if trace wheat matters to you.
  • Standard slushes, limeades and most sodas run on HFCS syrup. Unsweet iced tea, plain coffee, water or the diet/zero drinks sidestep it — and skip Route 44 sizes even for lower-risk drinks; portion size drives symptom stacking.
  • Manage the bun: Jr. sizes halve the wheat load, and any burger or dog can come bunless in a tray or lettuce-wrapped. Buns and hot dog rolls also contain HFCS.
