Low FODMAP at Toby Carvery
Toby Carvery is one of the more workable big UK chains for a low-FODMAP meal, because the carvery format puts you in charge: meats are carved to order and you build your own plate from the deck. The core — plain slow-roasted beef, turkey and gammon with roast potatoes and carrots — is naturally low FODMAP. The traps are everything ladled or spooned on top: sage & onion stuffing, gravy, cauliflower cheese and Yorkshire puddings. Skip those and you can eat genuinely well here. Staff can look up full ingredient and allergen details on their tablets, so ask before committing to glazed meats or seasonal sides.
✅ Safest picks
Hand-carved roast beef (plain, no gravy)
A plain slow-roasted joint of beef is essentially FODMAP-free protein. The risk isn't the meat — it's the gravy that gets ladled on by default.
💬 Order it: Ask the carver for your plate 'dry' — no gravy, no stuffing. You can always add a little of your own low-FODMAP gravy trick: meat juices from the carving board are fine, the thickened onion gravy is not.
Roast turkey breast
Plain roasted turkey breast, carved to order — as safe as restaurant food gets. Same rule as the beef: the meat is fine, the toppings are the problem.
💬 Order it: Say no to stuffing when the carver offers it — at Toby it's sage & onion and often gets tucked next to the meat automatically.
Roast potatoes and carrots from the deck
Toby's roasties are peeled potatoes roasted in oil, and carrots are one of the safest vegetables on any deck. Together with the meat this is a full, satisfying carvery plate.
💬 Order it: Take roasties from a freshly topped-up tray with the tongs for that tray. Keep peas to a small spoonful (they carry some GOS) and go easy on swede and cabbage — fine in modest portions, not as plate-fillers.
Glazed gammon (small check first)
The gammon itself is low FODMAP, but Toby glazes its joints, and glazes can contain honey or fruit sugars. It's usually a small surface amount, but worth a question.
💬 Order it: Ask staff to check the glaze ingredients on their tablet — if it's honey-based, ask for a centre cut with less glaze, or stick to beef and turkey.
Mashed potato (modest serve)
The mash is potato with butter and milk — the lactose load in a normal scoop is small, but it adds up if you pile it high alongside other dairy.
💬 Order it: One scoop, not three — and skip it entirely if you're layering it with cheese elsewhere in the meal. Roasties are the safer potato on this deck.
⚠️ Skip these
Toby Tasters starters (garlic ciabatta, caramelised onion tarts, cheesy mushrooms, loaded mac & cheese)
Almost the entire starter list is built on garlic bread, caramelised onion, mushrooms or mac & cheese — there is no genuinely low-FODMAP option among the Tasters. Skip the course and spend the appetite at the deck.
Good to know
- •The self-serve format is your biggest asset: you assemble the plate, so build it around carved meat, roasties and carrots and simply walk past the stuffing, cauliflower cheese and gravy.
- •Say 'dry plate, no gravy or stuffing please' at the carving station — both get added by default if you don't.
- •Staff can pull up full ingredient and allergen information on their tablets — use this to check the meat glazes and any rotating seasonal vegetables before you commit.
- •Treat peas, swede and cabbage as small-spoonful items, not plate-fillers — they're moderate rather than safe in big carvery portions.
- •Weekend roast lamb is a plain joint and rotates onto the deck — another safe protein when you want a change from beef and turkey.
- •The breakfast buffet can work too: bacon, eggs and hash browns with no beans, sausages or mushrooms — but ask staff to check the hash brown ingredients first.
