Low FODMAP at JD Wetherspoon

Wetherspoons is a paradox for low-FODMAP eating: the menu leans hard on curries, chilli, burgers and battered fish — the highest-FODMAP corner of pub food — but no UK chain gives you better information to navigate it. Full allergen and ingredient details for every dish are published in the Wetherspoon app and on its website, so you can check any item before ordering. The workable core is the grill section and the jacket potatoes: sirloin steak, gammon and eggs, and a jacket with simple fillings. Ignore the value-deal signage pushing you toward Curry Club and you can put together a solid plate.

✅ Safest picks

18

Wiltshire cured ham, eggs and chips

Plain cured ham, fried eggs and chips — one of the simplest plates on the menu, with nothing sauced or stuffed. Chips are plain potato.

💬 Order it: It usually comes as-is with no trimmings to dodge. Check the dish in the app anyway — specs change between menu revisions.

25

Classic 8oz sirloin steak

Steak, chips, tomato and a fried egg is naturally low FODMAP. The two ride-alongs to manage are the mushrooms (mannitol) and the peas (GOS), plus any seasoning blend on the steak.

💬 Order it: Order at the bar rather than the app so you can ask to swap mushrooms and peas for extra tomato or a fried egg, and check the steak seasoning ingredients in the app first — spice blends can hide garlic.

22

Jacket potato with cheese

A baked potato is FODMAP-free, and mature cheddar is naturally very low in lactose. The salad garnish is fine; the coleslaw option is the one to refuse (onion in the mix and mayo).

💬 Order it: Choose cheese, not coleslaw, and ask for butter on the side so you control the amount. Add a plain side salad rather than beans.

25

Jacket potato with tuna mayo

Tuna and mayonnaise are both low FODMAP in a normal serve — the only question is whether the mayo mix includes onion, which the app's ingredient listing will settle in ten seconds.

💬 Order it: Check 'tuna mayo' in the app for onion before ordering; if it's in there, fall back to the cheese jacket.

30

Grilled chicken breast burger, no bun

The grilled (not fried) chicken breast with chips and salad works once the wheat bun is gone — but grilled chicken at chains often carries a marinade, and marinades are where garlic hides.

💬 Order it: Ask for it bunless with the burger sauce left off, and check the marinade ingredients in the app. The buttermilk fried version is a no — wheat coating.

30

Traditional breakfast, customised

Bacon and fried eggs are safe; the standard plate's beans and sausage are not. Spoons is flexible about swaps, which turns this into a decent plate.

💬 Order it: Ask for no beans and no sausage, with extra egg or bacon instead. Check the hash browns in the app — some recipes include onion. Toast is wheat; skip it or bring your own workaround.

⚠️ Skip these

92

Curry Club curries (chicken tikka masala, jalfrezi, beef Madras)

Every curry on the menu is built on an onion-and-garlic base sauce, and they come with naan or rice sides that add wheat. The Thursday deal makes them tempting; the base makes them the worst section of the menu for FODMAPs.

95

Five-bean chilli (bowl or jacket filling)

Five kinds of beans plus an onion-garlic tomato base — probably the single highest-FODMAP item in the building, and it also lurks as a jacket potato filling.

80

Beef burgers as served (bun, fried onions, burger sauce)

The patty is fine; the delivery system isn't. Wheat bun, fried onions and an onion-y burger sauce stack three fructan sources on one plate. Bunless with swaps drops the load dramatically — as served, it's a trap.

62

Freshly battered cod and chips

The fish and the chips are innocent — the wheat batter is the issue, and it's a lot of batter. Spoons sells more fish and chips than almost anyone in the UK, but there's no gluten-free batter option.

85

Small-plate pizzas

Wheat base plus a tomato sauce that includes garlic and onion in the spec, and toppings like BBQ chicken and roasted vegetables add more of the same.

Good to know

  • Use the Wetherspoon app before you order anything: it publishes full allergen and ingredient details for every dish and lets you filter the menu — the best transparency of any UK pub chain. Gluten filtering is a useful first pass for wheat fructans, but still scan for onion and garlic separately.
  • Order at the bar for anything needing swaps — 'no bun', 'swap mushrooms for tomato', 'no beans' — since the app ordering flow gives you less room to customise.
  • Head for the grills and jackets and ignore the club-deal signage: Curry Club, burger deals and the chilli are the highest-FODMAP corner of the menu dressed up as the best value.
  • Watch the ride-alongs: peas, mushrooms and baked beans are attached to most grills and breakfasts by default and are all easy to swap out if you ask.
  • Chips share fryers with battered items — irrelevant to your FODMAP load (the trace is tiny) but worth knowing if you also avoid gluten for other reasons.
  • On drinks: apple and fruit ciders carry an excess-fructose load; dry wine or a simple spirit with soda water is the lower-FODMAP route through a very long drinks menu.
