Is Grupo Modelo Corona Extra low FODMAP?

FODMAP score

26

Low FODMAP

Yes — one 12-ounce Corona Extra is a reasonable order for a sensitive gut. It's a Mexican lager brewed from water, barley malt, non-malted cereals (corn), hops, and yeast at 4.6% ABV. At about 13.9 grams of carbs per bottle it carries more residual carbohydrate than a light lager, but most of that is non-fermentable leftovers rather than intact fructans — the yeast eats the bulk of the fermentable sugars during brewing, and the corn adjunct is a low-FODMAP grain to begin with. The customary lime wedge is not a problem either: a wedge-sized amount of lime is a low-FODMAP garnish, so squeeze away. What deserves more respect than the recipe is the format — Coronas tend to arrive in buckets, and three or four bottles multiply both the carb load and the alcohol, which is a gut irritant on its own, capable of speeding motility and irritating the gut lining regardless of FODMAP math. One or two with food sits very differently than a bucket on an empty stomach.

What's inside

Barley maltThe fructan-bearing grain in the recipe, though brewing ferments most of it away before bottling.
Corn (non-malted cereal adjunct)A low-FODMAP adjunct grain that lightens the barley share of the grain bill.
HopsAdds bitterness and aroma with no fermentable carbohydrate.
Alcohol (4.6% ABV)Alcohol irritates the gut and can speed motility independent of the drink's FODMAP content.
Lime wedge (customary serve)A wedge of lime is a low-FODMAP citrus garnish — the signature serve doesn't add risk.

📏 Per 12-oz bottle: 4.6% ABV, ~13.9 g carbs. The lime wedge is fine; the bucket format is the real variable — each extra bottle stacks carbs and alcohol alike.

Gentler alternatives

Corona PremierSame brand and same taste profile at the same bar, brewed drier — about 2.6 g carbs per 12 oz.

Tequila with soda water and limeDistillation leaves no fermentable carbs, and it keeps the same lime-forward order at a Mexican restaurant.

Michelob UltraA widely stocked light lager with one of the smallest residual carb loads in beer.
