Is Dave's Killer Bread 21 Whole Grains and Seeds low FODMAP?
FODMAP score
74
High FODMAP
No — this is one of the heavier fructan loads in the bread aisle. The label leads with organic whole wheat flour and cracked whole wheat, then layers on a 21-grain mix that includes rolled rye, rolled barley, triticale, and spelt — four more fructan-carrying grains stacked on top of the wheat base. Because the loaf is dense (slices run about 45 g), a single slice delivers noticeably more grain than a slice of ordinary sandwich bread, and a two-slice sandwich compounds that further. The good news on the label: the seeds doing much of the visual work — flax, sunflower, pumpkin, quinoa, millet — are low FODMAP at these amounts, the sweeteners are cane sugar and molasses (sucrose, not excess fructose), and there is no inulin, chicory root, honey, or HFCS anywhere on the ingredient list. So the problem isn't additives; it's simply the concentration of wheat, rye, and barley per slice. If you're in a strict elimination phase this is an easy skip. If you're reintroducing wheat and tolerating it well, a single slice is a reasonable upper-end test — just don't start here.
What's inside
📏 Slices are dense at about 45 g, so even one slice carries more wheat, rye, and barley than a typical slice of sandwich bread — and a two-slice sandwich roughly doubles an already high fructan dose.
Gentler alternatives
↳True long-fermented sourdough (bakery section) — Slow fermentation consumes much of the wheat's fructans, making a slice far easier to tolerate.
↳Schar Artisan Baker Multigrain — Rice- and sourdough-based gluten-free loaf with seeds, skipping the wheat-rye-barley fructan stack.
↳Udi's Gluten Free Whole Grain Bread — Whole-grain feel from low FODMAP flours like brown rice and tapioca instead of wheat and rye.
