Is Healthy Choice Zero Tomato Basil Chicken Bowl low FODMAP?
FODMAP score
71
High FODMAP
No — though this is the closest call of the batch, and it stings a little, because the bowl is genuinely one of the better-constructed options in the freezer case: real chicken breast, a big pile of vegetables, mozzarella, and only 17 grams of total carbohydrate. For FODMAPs specifically, though, four flags keep it just over the line. First, asparagus: published FODMAP research puts it among the highest excess-fructose vegetables, with even a few spears carrying a meaningful dose — and it is a named vegetable here, not a garnish. Second, the seasoning: onions, garlic and garlic powder all appear in the 2-percent-or-less list — small quantities, but fructans register at seasoning level. Third, the penne is blended from pea flour and wheat flour, adding GOS and fructans in one ingredient, though the pasta portion in this low-carb bowl is genuinely small. Fourth, zucchini is fine in modest amounts but contributes fructans as portions climb. On the friendly side: the chicken is plain FODMAP-free protein, the kale, chard and spinach are green-light greens, tomatoes are fine at this portion, and part-skim mozzarella is naturally low in lactose. Because the total carbohydrate is so low, the absolute FODMAP load is far smaller than a classic pasta tray — this bowl sits just over our high threshold, not deep into it. Someone well past elimination who has cleared fructose rechallenges and tolerates trace onion and garlic may find this bowl workable; if you are still in elimination, or asparagus and onion are known problems for you, pick one of the swaps below instead.
What's inside
📏 One 9.5 oz (269 g) bowl with just 17 g total carbohydrate, so the absolute FODMAP dose is smaller than a traditional pasta meal — but the asparagus and the onion-garlic seasoning are present at any portion size, so eating half the bowl does not remove the flags.
