Is Craft breweries IPA (India Pale Ale, style-wide) low FODMAP?

FODMAP score

58

Moderate

Depends on the style and the pour — IPAs are the corner of the beer menu most likely to push a night into uncomfortable territory. The style is brewed to higher gravity, meaning more grain in the mash, and that bigger barley bill leaves more behind: a typical IPA runs 15-20 grams of carbs per 12 ounces versus 3-14 for mainstream lagers, and hazy/New England versions run 15-25 grams because brewers deliberately keep unfermented material in the glass for body — often using wheat and oats alongside barley, which adds to the oligosaccharide load. The hops themselves are not the issue; hop bitterness contributes no fermentable carbohydrate. The alcohol is: at 6-8% ABV, a standard 16-ounce taproom pint of IPA is close to two standard drinks, and alcohol is a gut irritant independent of FODMAPs — it speeds motility and irritates the gut lining in a dose-dependent way. So a single West Coast IPA in a smaller pour is a very different event from two hazy pints. If you're set on the style, favor clearer, drier West Coast versions over hazies, check the ABV on the menu, and treat a 16-ounce pour of anything over 7% as a double.

What's inside

High-gravity barley malt billMore grain in the mash leaves more residual fructans and fermentable leftovers than a standard lager — 15-20 g carbs per 12 oz is typical.
Wheat and oats (hazy/NEIPA grain bills)Haze-driving grains raise the oligosaccharide and unfermented-starch load — hazies sit at the top of the style's carb range.
Hops (heavy dry-hopping)The style's signature ingredient adds bitterness and aroma but no fermentable carbohydrate.
Alcohol (typically 6-8% ABV)A dose-dependent gut irritant independent of FODMAPs — a 16-oz pint at 7% is nearly two standard drinks.
CarbonationStandard CO2 carbonation adds swallowed gas on top of the residual carb load.

📏 Style-wide, not one product — check the specific can or tap. Taproom pours are usually 16 oz; at 6-8% ABV that's ~1.5-2 standard drinks and roughly 20-33 g carbs per pint. Hazies and imperials sit highest; a 10-oz pour of anything over 7% is the sane order.

Gentler alternatives

Pilsner or light lager from the same tap listNearly every craft taproom pours one — a fraction of the residual carbs and usually 4-5% ABV instead of 7.

West Coast IPA in a 10-oz pourIf it has to be an IPA, the clearer, drier substyle in a smaller glass roughly halves both the carb and alcohol load of a hazy pint.

Gin or vodka with soda waterFor bars with a spirits shelf, distilled spirits carry no fermentable carbs at all.
