Is Classic cocktail Mimosa low FODMAP?

FODMAP score

34

Moderate

Depends on the pour and the juice — a single, bubbly-forward mimosa sits near the low end, but bottomless brunch changes the math. Dry sparkling wine (brut champagne, cava, or prosecco) ferments most of its grape sugar into alcohol, so a standard glass is a low-FODMAP base. Freshly squeezed orange juice is low FODMAP at about a half cup, and a typical mimosa uses only 2-3 oz, which stays under that line. Problems come from three directions. First, many US brunch spots pour from-concentrate juice, which is flagged as higher in FODMAPs than fresh-squeezed and sometimes carries added sweeteners. Second, refills: bottomless service can put a full pint of juice in front of you across one sitting, pushing fructose well past the low threshold even though each glass looked innocent. Third, sweeter sparkling styles labeled 'extra dry' or 'demi-sec' retain noticeably more residual sugar than brut. Layer on the non-FODMAP load — carbonation that distends a sensitive gut, plus alcohol's own irritant, motility-speeding effect — and the most predictable order is one glass, brut base, real squeezed juice, poured light on the juice. Ask what the bar pours; fresh-squeezed versus from-concentrate is the single biggest variable in this drink.

What's inside

Brut sparkling wineDry styles ferment nearly all grape sugar out; a standard glass is a low-FODMAP base.
Fresh-squeezed orange juiceLow FODMAP at about a half cup — a light 2-3 oz mimosa pour stays under the line, but refills stack past it.
From-concentrate orange juiceReconstituted juice is flagged as higher-FODMAP than fresh-squeezed and is what many high-volume brunch bars actually pour.
Sweeter sparkling styles (extra dry, demi-sec)Retain noticeably more residual sugar than brut despite the confusing 'dry' labeling.
Alcohol and carbonationBoth act on the gut directly — irritation, faster motility, and gas distension — independent of FODMAPs.

📏 One glass built on brut with a light (about 2 oz) pour of fresh-squeezed juice; bottomless refills multiply the fructose across the sitting.

Reverse mimosa (mostly bubbly, splash of juice)Keeps the look and the orange note while holding juice well under the half-cup line.
