Is Nabisco Premium Original Saltine Crackers low FODMAP?

FODMAP score

40

Moderate

Mostly — of all the classic wheat crackers, plain saltines are among the easiest to fit into a FODMAP-conscious snack, as long as you respect the portion. The label is short and old-fashioned: unbleached enriched wheat flour, soybean and/or canola oil, palm oil, sea salt, salt, malted barley flour, baking soda, and yeast. Wheat flour is the main ingredient, so fructans are present — that's unavoidable in a saltine — but the standard serving of five crackers weighs only about 15 grams, one of the smallest wheat doses in the cracker aisle. At that size the fructan load is modest, and published FODMAP research finds plain wheat crackers can sit at or near the low-FODMAP line in small serves. The malted barley flour adds a trace of a second fructan grain, but it's a minor ingredient — more footnote than concern. There's no dairy, no onion, no garlic, no honey or high-fructose sweeteners; the yeast is plain baker's yeast, which is FODMAP-quiet. The realistic failure mode is the sleeve: saltines are the thing people reach for when their stomach is off, and absent-mindedly eating twenty of them turns a small wheat serve into a big one. Bland does not mean FODMAP-free. If wheat is a confirmed strong trigger for you, even five crackers may talk back, and a rice-based table cracker is the better default. For everyone else, a counted-out stack of five with some aged cheddar or peanut butter is one of the more predictable wheat-based snacks you can pick — just put the sleeve back in the box first.

What's inside

Unbleached enriched wheat flourThe main ingredient and the fructan source — though the tiny 5-cracker serving keeps the dose one of the smallest in the aisle
Malted barley flourA second fructan-containing grain, but present in a minor, trace amount
YeastBaker's yeast carries no meaningful FODMAP load
Soybean/canola and palm oilsOils contain no FODMAPs
Baking sodaLeavening with no FODMAP content

📏 A serving is 5 crackers (about 15 g) — the small portion is exactly what keeps this borderline rather than clearly problematic. Consider 5–10 crackers the ceiling; a sleeve during a rough afternoon is effectively a different, much higher-fructan product.
