Is Simple Mills Almond Flour Crackers, Fine Ground Sea Salt low FODMAP?
FODMAP score
78
High FODMAP
No — and this one genuinely surprises people, because everything about the box says gut-friendly: almond flour, gluten-free, a short ingredient list, the health-food shelf. But read to the end of that short list and you'll find organic onion and organic garlic, and dried alliums are among the most concentrated fructan sources in the food supply. Unlike wheat, where portion size gives you real room to negotiate, onion and garlic deliver trigger-level fructans in very small amounts — the quantity it takes to season a cracker is enough to matter for people who react to them, and there's no eating around an ingredient baked into every cracker. That's the deal-breaker. The supporting cast adds a second, quieter issue: the main flour is a nut-and-seed blend of almonds, sunflower seeds, and flax. Almonds carry GOS, another FODMAP group — a small handful of almonds tests low in published FODMAP research, but a 30-gram serving of almond-based crackers stacks a meaningful GOS dose on top of the alliums. Tapioca starch, cassava flour, sunflower oil, and sea salt are all FODMAP-quiet, for what it's worth. To be fair about who this cracker suits: if you're avoiding gluten and FODMAPs aren't your issue, it's a well-made product with an honest label. But gluten-free and low-FODMAP are different claims, and this box is the textbook example of why reading the label beats trusting the shelf. If onion and garlic sit on your trigger list — and for most fructan-sensitive people they're near the top — leave it at the store and reach for an allium-free almond-rice cracker instead.
What's inside
📏 A serving is 17 crackers (30 g), but portion math doesn't rescue this one: dried onion and garlic are trigger-level at any realistic serving if alliums set you off, and the full serving also carries a notable almond (GOS) load on top.
