Is Weetabix low FODMAP?

FODMAP score

78

High FODMAP

Not a good fit — Weetabix is essentially a compressed block of wheat, and wheat fructans are the whole story here. The UK label reads Wholegrain Wheat (95%), Malted Barley Extract, Sugar, Salt plus added B vitamins and iron, so the standard two-biscuit serving (37.5g) delivers around 35g of wholegrain wheat before you pour anything on it. That is a substantial fructan load in a single bowl, and the malted barley extract adds a touch more from the same family, though the quantity is small. To its credit, the list is otherwise clean: no honey, no inulin or chicory fibre, no dried fruit, and very little sugar — fructans are the one issue rather than one of several. Some people get on with a single biscuit, but the serving printed on the box lands firmly in high territory, and topping it with regular cow's milk stacks lactose on top. This is a cereal to swap rather than shrink: a rice- or corn-based flake, or a modest bowl of oats, keeps the quick-breakfast role without leading with wheat.

What's inside

Wholegrain Wheat (95%)Almost the entire biscuit is wheat, a concentrated fructan source; a two-biscuit serve is roughly 35g of it.
Malted Barley ExtractBarley carries fructans too; the amount here is small but it adds to an already wheat-heavy base.
SugarPlain sucrose in a small quantity — balanced glucose and fructose, not a FODMAP concern.
Salt and added vitamins/ironNiacin, riboflavin, thiamin, folic acid and iron are FODMAP-irrelevant fortification.

📏 The box serving is 2 biscuits (37.5g), which is nearly all wheat; even a single biscuit carries a meaningful fructan dose, and cow's milk adds lactose on top.

Gentler alternatives

Nestlé GoFree Corn FlakesCorn-based, wheat-free flakes stocked in most UK free-from aisles — the same quick-bowl role without the fructan-dense wheat base.

Porridge made from plain rolled oatsOats are the gentlest mainstream UK breakfast grain at a modest serve, and plain porridge oats have a one-ingredient label.

Kallo rice cereal or plain puffed riceRice is among the lowest-FODMAP grains, so a rice-based cereal keeps breakfast simple with lactose-free milk.
