Low FODMAP at Tesco
The UK's biggest supermarket is one of the easiest places to build a low-FODMAP basket: a large Free From aisle, own-brand lactose-free dairy alongside the full Arla Lactofree line-up, and complete ingredient lists for every own-brand product on Tesco.com. The danger zone is the middle of the store — cooking sauces, stock cubes, flavoured snacks and ready meals are saturated with onion and garlic powder, and a 'Free From' flash on the pack means gluten- or dairy-free, not FODMAP-free.
✅ Safest picks
Lactose-free dairy: Tesco Lactose Free dairy drink + Arla Lactofree
Real milk with the lactose broken down by lactase enzyme, so you keep the taste and calcium without the lactose load. Tesco's own 1L Lactose Free Semi Skimmed Dairy Drink is the budget option; Arla Lactofree covers whole, semi and skimmed milk plus cheese, soft cheese, cream and yogurt.
💬 Order it: Find it in the fresh milk chiller, not the Free From aisle. Grab Lactofree soft cheese and cream too — they make white sauces and cheesecakes workable at home.
Tesco Free From white sliced bread and gluten-free pasta
The Free From white sliced loaf is built on tapioca starch, rice flour and potato starch — no wheat, so no wheat fructans. The Free From pasta range does the same job for spaghetti and penne nights.
💬 Order it: Stick to the plain breads and pastas. Scan Free From rolls, wraps and cereal bars for chicory root fibre (inulin) and apple juice concentrate before they go in the trolley.
Hard cheeses from the regular cheese aisle
Mature cheddar, Red Leicester, parmesan and other hard cheeses are naturally very low in lactose because it's lost during ageing — no specialist product needed.
💬 Order it: Buy standard own-brand mature cheddar and skip the Free From premium. Avoid pre-made cheese spreads and 'cheese and onion' anything.
Plain snack staples: rice cakes, oatcakes, ready salted crisps, plain popcorn
Plain rice cakes, plain oatcakes, ready salted crisps and lightly salted popcorn are simple, low-FODMAP snack bases stocked in every store size.
💬 Order it: Ready salted or lightly sea salted only — nearly every other crisp flavour on Tesco's shelf lists onion and/or garlic powder. Salt-and-vinegar is the other usually-safe flavour, but check the pack.
Garlic-infused olive oil
The classic flavour workaround: garlic's fructans are water-soluble, not oil-soluble, so infused oil delivers the flavour without the FODMAP load.
💬 Order it: It lives in the oils aisle, not Free From. Chilli-infused oil is a good second buy for the same reason.
Naturally low-FODMAP fresh basics
Eggs, plain unmarinated meat and fish, potatoes, carrots, courgettes, cucumber, red peppers (small portions), oranges, firm bananas, kiwi, strawberries and grapes need no label-reading at all.
💬 Order it: Skip the marinated meats and counter kebabs — the marinades run on garlic and onion. Plain mince, chicken breasts, chops and fish fillets are the workhorses.
Porridge oats and rice-based breakfast cereals
Plain porridge oats in a modest bowl and simple rice-based cereals are the easiest low-FODMAP breakfasts on the shelf; make them up with lactose-free milk.
💬 Order it: Avoid muesli and granola (dried apple, sultanas, honey, sometimes inulin) and check 'high fibre' cereals for chicory root fibre and wheat as the first ingredient.

Free From and 'gut health' products with chicory root fibre
Chicory root fibre is inulin — a concentrated fructan — and it shows up in Free From cereal bars, high-fibre breads, protein bars and anything marketed for gut health. Gluten-free on the front, fructans on the back.
Good to know
- •Screen before you shop: every Tesco own-brand product has its full ingredient list on Tesco.com and the app, so you can vet sauces and snacks for onion powder, garlic powder and inulin from your sofa.
- •'Free From' is not 'low-FODMAP' — the label targets gluten and milk. Still scan for onion, garlic, chicory root fibre (inulin), apple/pear juice concentrate, honey and agave.
- •Shop the perimeter: produce, plain meat and fish, eggs and the milk chiller are naturally low-FODMAP territory; nearly all the ambushes live in the middle aisles.
- •Treat any 'flavoured' product as guilty until the label proves otherwise — flavoured crisps, rice pouches, couscous kits and ready meals almost all run on onion and garlic powder.
- •Don't pay the Free From premium for cheese — regular mature cheddar and parmesan are naturally very low in lactose.
- •Bigger Tesco Extra stores carry a wider range: plain rice noodles and firm tofu in world foods, more Lactofree lines, and a larger Free From bay than Express stores, which stock almost none of this.
