Is Heinz Baked Beans (Beanz) low FODMAP?

FODMAP score

80

High FODMAP

No — the beans themselves are the issue, and they are roughly half the recipe. Heinz Beanz are haricot (navy) beans in tomato sauce, and beans of this kind are among the most concentrated sources of GOS (galacto-oligosaccharides) on the grocery shelf. Canning softens the load slightly because some GOS leach into the surrounding liquid — but here the liquid is the sauce, and you eat it. The sauce itself is surprisingly clean by baked-bean standards: tomatoes, sugar, spirit vinegar, modified cornflour and natural flavors, with no onion or garlic declared on either the US-sold or UK label — something most American baked-bean brands cannot say. The sugar is plain sucrose and the cornflour is a non-fermentable thickener, so nothing else on the label compounds the bean load. That still does not make a normal portion workable: a half-cup serve carries substantial GOS, and the classic beans-on-toast pile is a multiple of that stacked on top of bread fructans. A spoonful or two as a side is the only genuinely small dose. If legumes sit badly with you, rinsed canned lentils in a plain tomato sauce are the closest gentle rebuild of the same plate.

What's inside

Haricot (navy) beansAbout half the tin and rich in GOS, which survive canning and also leach into the sauce you eat.
TomatoesAbout a third of the recipe — modest fructose that matters mainly because portions are rarely small.
SugarPlain sucrose, digested as balanced glucose and fructose.
Modified cornflourA corn-starch thickener, not a fermentable carbohydrate.
Natural flavors / spice extractsUnspecified blend — though notably, no onion or garlic is declared on either the US or UK label.

📏 Even the standard half-cup serve carries a substantial GOS load; a two-tablespoon spoonful as a condiment-sized side is the only realistically gentle dose, and beans-on-toast stacks bread fructans on top.

Gentler alternatives

Rinsed canned lentils in strained tomato sauceA quarter-cup of well-rinsed canned lentils is a far smaller GOS dose with the same saucy-legume feel.

Rinsed canned chickpeas, quarter-cup serveCanned and rinsed chickpeas in small portions are a gentler legume option for the plate.

Eggs and grilled tomato on traditional sourdoughKeeps the cooked-breakfast plate; long-fermented sourdough carries fewer fructans than standard bread.
