Is Classic cocktail Margarita low FODMAP?
FODMAP score
48
Moderate
Depends heavily on how it's made — a fresh-lime margarita and a sour-mix margarita are two different drinks as far as your gut is concerned. Tequila itself is a clean base: distillation leaves the agave mash's fermentable sugars behind in the still, so the spirit carries no FODMAPs. Fresh lime juice is low FODMAP at cocktail quantities. The trouble arrives on the sweet side. Most US chain and restaurant margaritas are built on commercial sour or margarita mix, which is typically sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup — concentrated excess fructose, a classic trigger. 'Skinny' margaritas often swap in agave nectar, which is even more fructose-heavy (usually over 50% fructose) and no safer a choice. Orange liqueur (triple sec, Cointreau) sits in between: a sugared liqueur with no published FODMAP data that adds several grams of sugar per standard 1 oz pour. Order it 'fresh' — tequila, fresh-squeezed lime, a touch of simple syrup or a light hand of triple sec — and the FODMAP load drops sharply; order off the frozen machine and you are mostly drinking sweetened mix. Alcohol itself also irritates the gut and speeds motility independent of FODMAPs, so pace matters either way.
What's inside
📏 One margarita made with fresh lime, on the rocks; frozen-machine and pitcher versions run on sweetened mix and multiply the fructose per glass.
Gentler alternatives
↳Ranch water (tequila, sparkling water, fresh lime) — Same agave spirit and lime in the same setting, with no sweetened mix at all.
↳Fresh-lime margarita, light on the triple sec — Ask the bartender for fresh juice and a small simple-syrup pour instead of mix or agave — same drink, far less fructose.
↳Tequila on the rocks with a lime wedge — The distilled base alone carries no fermentable carbs; the lime keeps the flavor profile.
