Is Marigold Swiss Vegetable Bouillon Powder low FODMAP?

FODMAP score

72

High FODMAP

Marigold Swiss Vegetable Bouillon stacks more separate FODMAP triggers than any big-brand cube: onion, leek and garlic are all on the label, plus added lactose and celery seed. The UK ingredients read sea salt, hydrolysed vegetable protein (soya, maize), potato starch, palm oil, vegetables 8% (parsnip, onion, leek, carrot), lactose (milk), parsley, celery seed, turmeric, white pepper, garlic, mace, lovage and nutmeg. The health-shop halo is misleading here — this is exactly the tub many sensitive cooks assume is the safe choice, and it quietly fails the onion, garlic, celery and dairy screens all at once. Per teaspoon the individual doses are small (vegetables make up only 8% of the powder in total, garlic sits in the seasoning tail, and the lactose is likely under a gram), but four trigger families in one spoon stack quickly, and this powder tends to be used generously — a spoon in the soup, another in the grains, another in the gravy. That free-pouring habit is what pushes it into the high band. Onion- and garlic-free bouillon options exist online in the UK, and a homemade version from carrot, parsnip, leek greens and herbs replicates most of what this powder does.

What's inside

Onion and leek (in the 8% vegetable blend)Two fructan sources baked into the vegetable base
GarlicThe most potent trigger gram for gram, even at seasoning level
Lactose (milk)Added milk sugar; small per teaspoon but it stacks with everything else in the spoon
Celery seedSpice-level amount, but an allergen and a screen-out ingredient for many
Hydrolysed vegetable protein (soya, maize)The savoury backbone of the powder; not a FODMAP concern
Parsnip and carrotThe gentle half of the vegetable blend

📏 Around one teaspoon (4g) per 200ml; every extra spoon re-doses onion, leek, garlic and lactose together, so measure it rather than free-pouring.
