Is Oxo Beef Stock Cubes low FODMAP?
FODMAP score
65
Moderate
Oxo Beef Stock Cubes fail both checks the sensitive-gut community runs on a stock cube: wheat flour is the second ingredient after salt, and onion appears twice, as onion extract and onion powder. The UK label reads salt, wheat flour (with added calcium, folic acid, iron, niacin, thiamin), yeast extract, maize starch, flavour enhancers (monosodium glutamate, disodium guanylate), colour (ammonia caramel), beef fat (4.5%), autolysed yeast extract, dried beef bonestock, flavouring, sugar, acidity regulator (lactic acid), onion extract, onion powder and potassium chloride. In absolute terms one small cube dissolved in 190ml delivers a modest fructan dose — the wheat flour amounts to well under a gram — but this is a cube built on the two ingredient families FODMAP-aware shoppers are most actively avoiding, and the gluten also rules it out for anyone who needs wheat-free for other reasons. The yeast extracts themselves are fine at these levels; they're not the issue. If Oxo is the flavour you're after, a beef-style onion-free cube or a dab of yeast extract spread dissolved in hot water gets you most of the way there without the wheat-plus-double-onion combination.
What's inside
📏 Pack guidance is one cube per 190ml of hot water; crumbling cubes straight into mince or stew concentrates the wheat and onion well beyond that dilution.
Gentler alternatives
↳Massel Beef Style 7's Cubes — Wheat-, onion- and garlic-free beefy cubes; available online in the UK
↳Yeast extract spread (e.g. Marmite) in hot water — A small spoonful dissolved in hot water gives Oxo-style savoury depth and is low FODMAP at spread-level servings
↳Homemade beef bone stock — Batch-cook and freeze; total control over the aromatics
