Is Hidden Valley Ranch Dressing low FODMAP?
FODMAP score
74
High FODMAP
No — bottled ranch stacks several FODMAP sources into one squeeze. Hidden Valley's Original Ranch is built on vegetable oil, water, buttermilk, sugar, and salt, followed by a less-than-1% cluster that includes dried garlic, dried onion, spices, and flavor enhancers. Buttermilk brings lactose, and dried garlic and dried onion are concentrated fructan sources — drying removes water but keeps the fructans, so a little goes further than it looks on the label. No single one of these is a huge dose in a thin drizzle, but they arrive together, and real-life ranch portions run large: dip bowls and heavy salad pours easily reach two to four tablespoons. The sugar itself is plain sucrose and not a concern, and MSG, despite its reputation, isn't a FODMAP. The core problem is that the trigger trio — lactose, garlic fructans, onion fructans — is baked into the recipe at every serving size, so there's no clean portion cap to lean on. A homemade version made with mayo, lactose-free milk, dried dill and chives, and garlic-infused oil gets remarkably close to the flavor without carrying the load.
What's inside
📏 There's no clean portion cap: buttermilk, dried garlic, and dried onion are in every pour. A thin drizzle is a smaller dose than a quarter-cup dip bowl, but the trigger ingredients never drop out.
Gentler alternatives
↳Homemade ranch — Mayo + lactose-free milk + dried dill, chives, and parsley + a splash of garlic-infused oil — the classic flavor without buttermilk lactose or garlic/onion solids.
↳Fody Foods salad dressings — A certified low FODMAP line made without garlic or onion; sold online and in many US grocers.
↳Lactose-free yogurt herb dip — Plain lactose-free Greek-style yogurt with lemon and fresh herbs makes a quick creamy dip stand-in.
