Is Rao's Homemade Marinara Sauce low FODMAP?

FODMAP score

78

High FODMAP

No — despite the famously clean label, Rao's Marinara is not low FODMAP. Whole onions and garlic are simmered directly into the sauce, and their fructans are water-soluble, so they dissolve into every spoonful and cannot be picked out. The rest of the recipe (tomatoes, olive oil, basil, oregano) is gentle; it is specifically the onion and garlic that drive the verdict.

What's inside

OnionsA primary flavor base; onion fructans leach into the liquid during simmering, so every serving carries them.
GarlicOne of the most concentrated fructan sources per gram — even a modest amount in a sauce adds up.
Italian whole peeled tomatoesTomato is generally fine in modest amounts, but concentrated tomato adds fructose when portions get large.
Olive oilPure fat — contains no fermentable carbohydrates.
Basil, oregano, black pepperHerbs and spices at seasoning levels are FODMAP-free.

📏 A typical serving is 1/2 cup (about 125 g) of sauce — and because the fructans are dissolved throughout, a smaller ladle reduces the dose but never makes it onion- and garlic-free.

Gentler alternatives

Rao's Sensitive Formula MarinaraThe same brand's onion- and garlic-free version — carrots, basil, and oregano carry the flavor instead.

Fody Foods Marinara SauceBuilt without onion or garlic, using garlic-infused oil for flavor without the fructans.

Plain tomato passata + garlic-infused olive oilA two-ingredient DIY swap: infused oil delivers garlic flavor because fructans do not dissolve into fat.
