Is Sweet Baby Ray's Original Barbecue Sauce low FODMAP?
FODMAP score
82
High FODMAP
No — the very first ingredient is high fructose corn syrup, the signature excess-fructose sweetener that a low FODMAP approach restricts. Sweet Baby Ray's Original is built on HFCS, distilled vinegar, tomato paste, and modified corn starch, followed by a less-than-2% list that includes pineapple juice concentrate, natural smoke flavor, molasses, dried garlic, mustard flour, corn syrup, sugar, tamarind, and celery seed. That stacks the deck from several directions at once: HFCS supplies unbalanced fructose in real quantity, dried garlic adds fructans, and molasses and pineapple juice concentrate pile smaller fructose loads on top. The genuinely safe ingredients — distilled vinegar, smoke flavor, mustard flour, spices — cannot offset a sweetener that leads the label. Barbecue sauce is also one of the easiest condiments to over-serve: it gets brushed on repeatedly during grilling and then used again as a dip, so real-world portions routinely reach three or four tablespoons. This is one of the clearest high-load bottles in the American grocery aisle, but also one of the easiest to replace, since certified low FODMAP barbecue sauces made without HFCS, garlic, or onion are now sold online and at many US retailers.
What's inside
📏 A thin single brush on one piece of meat is the only realistically small dose; the label's two-tablespoon serving already leads with HFCS, and dipping or double-saucing during grilling pushes well past it.
Gentler alternatives
↳Fody Original BBQ Sauce — Certified low FODMAP — sweetened without HFCS and made with no garlic or onion; available online and at many US retailers.
↳Fody Chipotle BBQ Sauce — The smoky variant of the same certified line, for recipes that lean on hickory flavor.
↳Quick homemade BBQ — Tomato paste, pure maple syrup, cider vinegar, smoked paprika, and a drop of liquid smoke — pantry-simple, with balanced sugars and no fructans.
