Is Any major brand Whiskey (bourbon, scotch, rye) low FODMAP?

FODMAP score

10

Low FODMAP

Yes — straight whiskey is low-FODMAP, whether you reach for bourbon, scotch, or rye. That includes rye: rye grain is one of the more fructan-heavy cereals in bread form, but distillation leaves fructans and sugars behind in the still, so none of them reach the bottle. The American 'straight' designation is unusually strict — straight bourbon may contain nothing but the distilled grain spirit and water — while scotch permits exactly one additive, plain caramel coloring (E150a), used in drops per bottle for color consistency rather than in amounts that create any meaningful fermentable load. Barrel aging adds vanillin, tannin, and toasted-oak character, which are aroma compounds, not carbohydrates. The exceptions to check are flavored bottlings: honey, apple, peach, and cinnamon 'whiskeys' are usually sweetened liqueur-style products, and honey in particular is an excess-fructose sweetener — treat them as separate drinks. Mixers matter too, since cola and ginger ale at a US bar are typically sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. Finally, alcohol itself is a gut irritant independent of FODMAPs and can speed gut motility, so even a clean pour is not automatically a comfortable one. Neat, on the rocks, or lengthened with soda water, whiskey is among the lowest-FODMAP orders at the bar.

What's inside

Distilled grain spirit (corn, barley, rye, or wheat mash)Grain fructans and sugars stay in the still; only alcohol and volatile flavor compounds carry over.
Charred-oak barrel compoundsVanillin and tannins are flavor molecules, not fermentable carbohydrates.
Plain caramel color E150a (scotch and some blends)Used in drops per bottle for color; straight bourbon may not contain it at all.
Honey and flavor syrups in flavored bottlingsHoney is an excess-fructose sweetener; flavored 'whiskeys' are sweetened liqueur-style products, not straight whiskey.
HFCS mixers (cola, ginger ale)The typical FODMAP source in a whiskey highball at a US bar.
Alcohol (ethanol) itselfA gut irritant independent of FODMAPs that can speed motility.

📏 Standard pour is 1.5 oz (44 ml). Neat, on the rocks, or with soda water is the low-FODMAP build. Honey, apple, peach, and cinnamon flavored bottlings are sweetened products — read them as separate labels — and cola or ginger ale highballs add high-fructose corn syrup.

Gentler alternatives

Whiskey highball with soda waterSame pour without the HFCS soda.

Old fashioned, light on the syrupCane-sugar simple syrup is a balanced glucose-fructose sweetener, and a small measure keeps the drink low-FODMAP.

Vodka or gin with sodaEqually low distilled alternatives if the bar's whiskey shelf is mostly flavored bottlings.
